Tips from the Kitchen: How to Choose Fresh Fish!

Photo via Cravedfw
As a university student who has to do a lot of grocery shopping, I often find myself at a loss when it comes to the seafood aisle. Am I getting ripped off because they know I'm a student? Is the sale worth it?

I stumbled upon this great article on Food52 on how to choose the freshest fish and thought it'd be great to share it with all of you!

Tips from the Kitchen: How to Eat Chicken Wings

Now, if anyone knows me, I will go to extreme lengths to not eat with my hands. So yes, that means I do not use my hands when I eat wings.

Buzzfeed recently released a gif-set on how to (properly) eat chicken wings which I am completely mind-blown about because I have never heard of this way! Unfortunatelly it does require a lot of hand work, so I'll stick with my fork but hey, this is definitely worth sharing!

Tips from the Kitchen: The Bread Code

Did you know the bread code tag actually tells you when the bread was baked?
via First Things
The colour of the code actually designates the day of the week on which a loaf of bread was baked.
Blue: Monday
Green: Tuesday
Red: Thursday
White: Friday
Yellow: Saturday

An easy way to remember is to use the alphabet. The colours run in alphabetical order so the earlier they appear in the alphabet, the earlier in the week the bread was baked.

Tips from the Kitchen: When are Fruits/Veg/Herbs in Season?

A huge misconception when buying fruits, vegetables or herbs is that they are available year round. Yes, you will be able to find them in the store, but they may not be at their freshest. Seeing as we're university students and still learning on how to buy the freshest groceries possible, we thought we'd give a quick run-down on buying fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs. Stumbled upon these amazingly helpful charts that displays which fruits/veg/herbs are in season:
